I am seeking a minimum of five people willing to add their names and email addresses to a petition to the New South Wales State Legislative Council to make legislation to apply means-tested land tax to churches, mosques, and all other religious temples and institutions in New South Wales to help the New South Wales Treasury pay for infrastructure, public education, and development costs in the state.
Currently New South Wales' (and Victorian) land tax law for charitable institutions determines a church or charitable institution should be taxed if the land/property is used for generating revenue or profits via certain classes of non-charitable activities.
This petition will ask The New South Wales Legislative Council to institute a means test for land tax that determines taxable status based solely upon the wealth of the charitable institution, and of its founders and main beneficiaries. If either passes an annual income threshold that puts them in the top 20% wealth bracket of institutions and persons, respectively, in the state, then the church should have land tax applied. For example, if the head clerics or ecclesiastical managers of the institutions have over $200K annual income from, or based upon, the running and/or founding of the church, then land tax automatically applies.
If you are interested in backing this petition then please either contact me directly on dr.bruce.long@outlook.com or else use the contact form and state your reason for the contact as "Tax Churches Petition".
